A major focus of our research is on developing smart technologies for improving feed utilization efficiency in ruminants and facilitating efficient bioconversion of food and agriculture wastes to value added materials. In both cases anaerobic microbial consortia are the work horses and complex syntrophic and redox processes dictate their fates and metabolic outputs. We are investigating the intricacies of these complex systems employing wet bench and computational approaches with the goal of identifying the precise means for manipulating the consortia towards the most desirable metabolic actions - optimal digestion of the feed in ruminants and efficient conversation of food wastes of highly variable composition to natural gas.
